For Building Components

Panels suitable for wood, metal, composite materials (such as plywood, OSB, gypsum board, metal-faced sandwich panels, etc.)

Testing Purpose

ASTM E72 focuses on testing the load-bearing capacity, stiffness, and failure modes of building materials or assemblies under controlled loads.

Record parameters (required to be recorded):

- Ultimate Load: The maximum load that the panel can withstand before damage (unit: kN/m², 9N/mm²).

- Deflection: Deformation under standard load (e.g., the panel is allowed to deflect ≤360 degrees).

- Failure modes: Cracking, shear slip, fastener failure, etc., used to improve design or material selection.

Testing Method

Testing types:

- Concentrated lateral load test: Simulate local pressure on panels or walls from furniture, equipment, etc.

- Uniform load test: Evaluate the overall load-bearing capacity of panels under wind, snow, or uniform live loads.

- Bending strength test: Assess the bearing capacity of panels when loaded at mid-span (e.g., the load-bearing performance of ceiling panels).

- Shear strength test: Analyze the deformation and damage capacity of materials under shear force (e.g., panels resisting lateral wind pressure).

Installation and testing:

- Fix the samples according to the actual application (e.g., ceiling panels are usually 1.2m×2.4m, designed according to the actual thickness of the panel) in the actual construction method.

- Install the test panel on the support structure to simulate actual boundary conditions (simply supported, fixed supported, etc.).

- Gradually apply loads (e.g., uniform loads through sandbags or air pressure, concentrated loads through hydraulic application).

- Record load-deformation curves until failure (cracking, bending or deformation exceeding the limit).

- Record the maximum load, stiffness, ultimate load (bearing capacity), and failure mode.
